I believe I have told you my non-politically correct philosophy, right? In a nutshell, people are weird. Yep, that's right. I said, people are weird. Politically correct, every individual is unique. But, I like mine better. People are weird. How do I know? I see a weird guy every time I look in the mirror. So, my post today illustrates just this point, that I'm weird. Still, the question is a good one.
Why do birds sing? Have you ever stopped long enough to listen? I'm sure you have and you've probably asked yourself the same question. Maybe you asked a grown up when you were a child. I don't know what the answer was but I can assume it had something to do with happiness, finding a mate, or even praising their Creator.
But, have you ever really stopped to listen. My all time favorite songbird is the cardinal. Yep, just the ordinary, common cardinal. This bird has followed me, wherever I've lived. I can generally pick out it's song, even though I've noted that it's different at different times. When my wife and I were getting ready to leave our first congregation in Oklahoma to go to the far north state of Iowa, I became acquainted with the cardinal's song. One particular incident (perhaps that is best left for another time), the song sounded just like the bird was singing, "I'm right here" with an Andy Griffith blurring of the words so that it sounded like, "I'm rightcheer." Love that bird and that song.
But, I digress. Have you paused to think about the birds singing? What do they have to sing about. I mean, we have air conditioning in the summer, heat in the winter. We have shelter from rain, sleet, snow, and anything in between. They don't. What do they have to sing about, then? They have nests. Woohoo! Kinda breezy, don't you think? And, what's more, not very waterproof and is only good for a short time. So, WHY do THEY sing?
I think it's actually the way their Creator made them. They don't worry. They don't worry about tomorrow. They don't worry about their next meal. They don't worry about their young. They don't worry about anything. They don't worry. Why? Because God takes care of them. "Aw, come on," you say. "God takes care of them? That's pretty rotten care, if you ask me. Why, look at their nests. Just twigs and bits of stuff. No protection." And yet, they sing. They have all they need. They find food, shelter, etc, just when they need it. Jesus said in one of the best "don't-worry" sections of the Bible, "Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows." (Mt. 10:29-31)
On the other hand, absence of worry doesn't mean the absence of awareness. As George Bush (41) would say, "It wouldn't be prudent." No, be aware of what's going on around you. But, don't become so obsessed with what is happening that you are overwhelmed with fear, having turned your heart from trusting the one who feeds the birds, clothes the animals, and provides for His loved ones. Trust Him and let your music lift your spirits and those about you.
Trust is the song of life.
