The Rest of the Story

Paul Harvey used to give us "the rest of the story". I can still hear that gravelly voice

telling us the story that led up to the rest of the story, the part that we didn't really know. If you've been reading this blog over the past few weeks, I've made a point of saying that we should be living in full trust and reliance upon God. That reliance is grounded in our knowledge of Biblical history as well as our own history with God, hearing and knowing of His great love to us. My launching pad for this discussion has been the great saint of us all, Abraham. "Abraham believed God and it was imputed to him as righteousness." (Genesis 15:6, Ro. 4:1, etc.) Here's the rest of the story. Sarah gave birth to Isaac. Isaac grew up, married Rebekah, who eventually gave birth to Jacob and Esau. Abraham also fathered Ishmael. From each of these children, (Ishmael, Jacob, Esau) comes whole people groups. Ishmael is the father of Arab peoples. Esau is the father of the Edomites, who ceased to exist in the Roman era. So, you see, Abraham believed God, he trusted God, and it was so. But, it didn't happen in his lifetime. Perhaps we should consider that the Bible is written as proof positive that God keeps His word time and time again. The case has been made for us to be fully persuaded of God's trustworthiness through our lives and through His own Word. Even if you can only accept the Bible as an historical document, you gotta admit, the history provides the foundation for our trust in God. I'm trying to live that. What about you?
